Introduction

There are important changes in the payment industry this year that you must be aware of and actions you must take in the way you accept payments. Along with this, there are also changes to the Sellerdeck Payments service.

The key points are:

  • You must enable 3D Secure on your payment gateway by 1st June 2021
  • Sellerdeck is introducing an upgrade to its Sellerdeck Payments service, powered by Opayo
  • Sellerdeck Payments powered by NMI will cease its fraud screening operation on 30th June 2021

Payments Services Directive v2 (PSD2) and Strong Customer Authentication (SCA)

The Payments Services Directive v2 (PSD2) is a directive that aims to enhance the security of internet payments to reduce fraud.

For ecommerce businesses, the major change in PSD2 is Strong Customer Authentication (SCA), which is a security protocol commonly met by 3D Secure, although other methods are available.

The initial deadline for SCA was 14 September 2019, but the Financial Conduct Authority (FCA) in the UK delayed the enforcement until 14 September 2021. However, SCA will be introduced gradually in the UK from 1 June 2021, so you must have a solution in place by 1 June 2021.

The EU’s deadline for SCA was 1 January 2021 and if you accept payments from cardholders within the European Economic Area (EEA), you should already comply with SCA.

3D Secure

3D Secure is currently the markets preferred method to comply with SCA (digital wallets, such as PayPal and Amazon Pay, have other methods).

The main benefit to you the merchant when using 3D Secure is the liability shift, meaning the card issuer (i.e. Visa, Mastercard) will accept liability for charge backs.

Enabling 3D Secure is typically a small settings change within your payment gateway. For Sellerdeck Payments, there is one settings change within Sellerdeck Desktop. For more information on how to activate 3D Secure, please visit – https://community.sellerdeck.com/forum/knowledge-base/sellerdeck-payments/554110-enabling-3d-secure-for-sellerdeck-payments

3D Secure v2

3D Secure v1 (a password against your account) is not the best browser experience. So the industry have upgraded 3D Secure to v2, which is typically a SMS message with a one time use code (it can also be biometrics).

3D Secure v2 will work automatically if you have 3D Secure enabled and your gateway and acquirer have the connection. If 3D Secure v2 is not available, then it will revert to 3D Secure v1.

For more information on PSD2 and SCA please see – https://www.sellerdeck.co.uk/psd2/

Fraud Screening

Sellerdeck Payments powered by NMI will no longer offer fraud screening from the 30th June 2021. After this date, the data usually shown in Sellerdeck Desktop and webMIS for fraud screening will be blank.

Sellerdeck Payments powered by Opayo

Sellerdeck has built a new leading payment gateway using Opayo (formerly Sage Pay) as the payment application. This partnership takes advantage of the Opayo platform, while integrating it into Sellerdeck Desktop to retain the key order processing features our customers benefit from.

There is an upgrade path from Sellerdeck Payments powered by NMI to Sellerdeck Payments powered by Opayo and a Sellerdeck Account Manager will work with you to ensure a smooth transition.

Sellerdeck Payments powered by Opayo has fraud screening and 3D Secure v2, today and for the future.

Sellerdeck Payments powered by NMI

Sellerdeck payments powered by NMI will no longer have fraud screening from 30th June 2021, further information, including the explanation why, has been sent directly to you by email. If you have not received this, please request the content by contacting admin@sellerdeck.com

Sellerdeck Payments powered by NMI will continue to be available for customers not wanting to upgrade to Sellerdeck Payments powered by Opayo.

Fraud screening was an additional feature added many years ago without an additional cost to the customer. The fraud screening solution is an additional cost to Sellerdeck and we will be passing on this saving by reducing the price of our Sellerdeck Payments by NMI contracts.

However, we recommend you upgrade to Sellerdeck Payments powered by Opayo for fraud screening and additional features.

Sellerdeck Payments powered by NMI is 3D Secure v2 ready and will be working with the first UK/EU acquirer by early June 2021. Throughout June further connections with acquirers will roll out until the majority of UK/EU acquirers will be 3D Secure v2 active by the end of June.

You may be on a annual contract, if you are and you decide to upgrade to Sellerdeck Payments by Opayo or switch to an alternative payment gateway, we will provide a refund based on our refund policy at the bottom of this blog.
